Preview of a new look
Over the past few weeks I’ve been sitting there working away on a complete change for this blog. I have a million posts in Draft that I can never seem to finish, but this change was something I kind of needed to do for myself. Why post to a site when you don’t even like the look of it yourself. If it wasn’t my own site, I wouldn’t visit it either.
This site is … bland. Boring. Emotionless. A lot like me for the most part. Which is fine I guess. But it also feels and looks washed out. As if its been left in the sun too long and has lost the sharpness and crispness it once held. Faded over time.
So, I have come up with a slightly newer, more updated design style and enhanced the colour scheme such that it appears crisp and sharp again.
Problem is, I do like the colour scheme a fair bit. :-)
The image is just a teaser and it really only shows part of what I’m doing. It might be a little large on your screen (unless you’re using a widescreen) but I have confirmed it fits into 1024×768. It is fixed width, I will not make it fit smaller resolution screens. It looks fine on my cellphone and my iTouch. In fact, the main column fits quite nicely and most people never look at the sidebars actual content anyway. Just the juicy part.
The design is intended to be an evolution of the current blog theme. You can still see the genesis and it compares favourably with the current theme. The background is darker, and the font size is a little larger. The overall effect makes the site a lot easier to read for longer periods (such as my usual long posts.) What will suffer is embedded content such as videos and the like. The main left column is less than 600 pixels wide. This will make some older posts look a little weird, but too bad.
Another big change will be the inclusion of search features. This is something that I have noticed people get most annoyed by. Especially when hitting the front page from a search engine.
The biggest change of all? Blogger will go bye-bye. This is designed to run on WordPress. Yes, after 4 or more years, I’m returning to using WordPress. My primary concern is the security of the site if I do that. But hopefully those guys are working to improve that problem.
Feedback would be good. Its still not finished. Am hoping to get it to the point where its ready this weekend. If I can get it online and running this weekend, that would be fantastic, but also a lot of work. We’ll see. :-)
