Oooh. Microsoft really is getting into a bit of a spot. The great innovators have discovered that ages old mantra, “Why innovate when you can buy?” Not only have they got a thing for Yahoo! they are now deciding that Apple is getting too much market share and so will face off against them head to head as well.

Microsoft was too busy to read its rejection letter from Yahoo this morning, as it announced its intention to buy Danger Inc., the maker of the popular Sidekick smart phone. The move suggests that the Redmond Giant plans to compete with its partners in the handset business.

Analysts announced this week that the iPhone, all by itself, was outselling all Microsoft’s Windows Mobile partners combined.

So instead of actually making some real effort and updating their interface on Windows Mobile (which is probably the only Windows platform that works well) they’re going to go and by a company thats more in tune with the younger market.

They really could have save themselves a whole lot of effort and just created a Windows Mobile version of the Zune and tried for the market that way.

Or not. :-P
