A lot of people come to this site looking for info on how to Ascend in Guild Wars: Nightfall. I’m not surprised that people are so unsure of it because there really isn’t any single “ascension” question that you have to do like there was in Prophecies or Factions.

So this post gives you a very simplistic walkthrough on how to ascend in Guild Wars Nightfall, just in case you’re looking for that info.

When you start out in Nightfall, you’re on the island of Istan. On this island you learn how to play your chosen character and how to use the game interface. Its a large island with quite a few story based quests (missions) you have to complete before you can progress to the mainland of Kourna and on to the other areas of the Nightfall realms. You follow through the various missions and complete up to the mission you get at the Consulate Docks just outside Kamadan. You cannot get to the docks until after you have completed the previous missions. It becomes available to you after the Blacktide Den mission is completed.

Just as an aside, on the Consulate Docks is an armor merchant from whom you can buy max level armor for your characters. My advice to you is to use the collectors until you get to that point. Do not waste your money and materials on buying armor. For the most part, you could get through most of the island without needing to upgrade beyond whats available from the various collectors. Seriously, save your mats and coins for the Docks armor merchant.

I strongly suggest that you do not do the mission from Consulate Docks until you have completed every other single mission on the island of Istan. That includes getting Master/Expert ratings for all the missions as well. You want to be as close to level 20 as you can possibly be. I managed to get my Dervish to level 19 before I made a serious attempt of the mission. Prior to that I’d loaded the mission with just henchies so that when I did to the real thing, I didn’t have to decompress everything ;-)

Once you’ve completed the mission from the Consulate Docks, you’ll find yourself in Yohlon Haven. This is where the quest for your Ascension begins!

Speak to Sunspear Modiki and go through the chat he puts you through. At the end of it, accept the quest called “Hunted!” as this is the beginning of your ascension.

Speak to the grumpy merchant called Zudash Dejarin. He’s just around the corner from Modiki in Yohlon Haven. He’s got a chip on his shoulder against Sunspears and so he will send you off into the wilderness to speak to a man called Elder Jonah in a little village called Ronjok.

Just as an aside, it doesn’t really mean much to the story, but Ronjok is the home town of Melonni. You can’t take Koss on this quest, and the only Warrior hench available to you is Devona, so you might want to take Melonni with you for the extra melee if you’re not one of the melee classes yourself. Unfortunately for me, I rarely used her because I’d use my own Dervish, which meant that she was still level 12 when I went to grab her. Not a major though.

On your way to Ronjok village, be sure to speak to the guys beside the resurrection shrines. They’ll give you bounties in the same way you got them back on Istan. You’re going to want those while you’re out in the Marga Coast area. Lots of Kournan Guards and Insects around to kill and you definitely want to get your ranks up as high as possible, as fast as possible.

If you’ve got your party balanced properly, you shouldn’t have any problems at all going around the Marga Coast. Just watch your agro and try to deal with only one group at a time if your party isn’t already level 20. Everything from this point on is at least level 20. However, in the Marga Coast area pretty much everything dies easily, so you shouldn’t have too much of a problem if you’re level 16+.

Once you get to Ronjok Village, speak to Elder Jonah who sents you into a cavern. The cavern is gated initially, so you need to speak to the guard there who will let you in.

Inside its pretty straight forward. There are 5 pools all infested with insects. 4 of these pools have normal bugs in them. Termites and grubs and so on. There are also a few patrolling termites as well. The 5th pool also has a boss bug you need to kill. Its not difficult to do, but make sure you pick up all your loot as you fight. The instant you kill the last bug at the last pool you will get thrown into a cutscene and lose any coins left on the ground.

Thats it. Once you hit that cutscene, you’re ascended. Its a lot easier than the previous two campaigns to get ascended. I know it sounds hard to believe, but this is seriously all there is to getting ascended in Nightfall.

No infused armor, no special glow. Essentially, what you’ve done is give the Sunspears a place to live on Kourna. This is their new base of operations for launching attacks against Varesh and beyond.

If you’d like a much better and clearer description than this, I suggest you check out the Guild Wiki article on the Hunted! quest.
