Bumping makes most locks almost pointless
Well… This is frightening in its simplicity. I’m suprised its taken over a year for it to become more widespread, but at the same time I’m kind of glad.
Just when you thought your house was safe eh? :-)
Simply put, it is possible to make a master key for almost any lock in the world that requires no special skill at all. All you need to start with is a key that fits in the lock itself, a file and some steady hands.
This technique is called Bumping, and you use an easily crafted bumpkey and something to tap the key with. It will open almost any lock the key fits into and leaves absolutely no trace at all. No sign of forced entry, no sign of anything. That means you’re not likely to get your insurance company to pay out if it ever happens to you.
I have the 11 page PDF that discusses the topic in a little more depth. I haven’t read all of it, but what I have read scares me.
Check out the video I’ve put in the full post to see just what I mean. BTW, if you aren’t from the Netherlands, you’ll be wanting to read the subtitles ;-)
