I caved in
Its now after 4:45am and I’ve succumbed to the temptation and gotten myself a copy of the retail/subscription version of TransGaming’s Cedega 5.0.1 in an effort to get Guild Wars running on Linux in a way that is playable.
I haven’t tried the game yet as I’ve been busy working on a miriad of other things in the mean time, however Cedega is currently installed on my machine and appears to be co-existing with Crossover Office for the moment. Admittedly, Crossover Office doesn’t have anything of significance installed on it yet. But thats just a preliminary issue for now. ;-) Actually neither have anything of significance installed on them yet. ;-)
If this works, I will no longer have any reason at all to load up Windows. Guild Wars is the only game I actively play regularly that doesn’t offer a Linux version. Every other game I play with regularity is available to me with Linux binaries so that it runs natively on Linux. Simple rule of thumb, if the game supports OpenGL, chances are it will port to Linux platforms with a minimum of hassle. If its a Windows game that uses OpenGL (such as WoW) then its supposedly pretty likely to rn under Cedega (and quite possibly Wine) to some degree as well. Especially if it claims to support Windows 98/Me.
So, Wednesday will be spent testing and trialing Guild Wars under the commercial/paid-for version of Cedega in a hope and effort that I never need to go back to Windows again. :-)
At least thats the intention and plan. Somehow I think I might find myself in a different situation at some point in the future. ;-)
I’ll update this with a result later. :-)
