Help! Need to figure this one out.

Okay everyone. I really need your help. With Odyssey out of picture after putting in at least a good 8 years or so, I’m in need of a replacement. Now, whatever I get to replace odyssey has to be at least as reliable, if not more so.

Now heres the problem. I’ve found a machine I think would be a suitable replacement. I think it might almost be able to fit in to the shoes of its predecessor. The problem is, I need to mitigate a certain aspect of my desired solution.

This is the beast I think could take odyssey’s place.

Now, I don’t care about the cost of buying it, thats not a concern. But how the hell am I going to be able to sleep at night with this going in the corner? Anyone know a way of keeping a rack like this quiet without stifling the air flow? ;-)

Oh… And any ideas how I can sell the power consumption as a benefit to those living under the same roof? ;-)

For some reason I get the feeling it could be a little hard to justify the power consumption vs the benefit of having 1.4 terabytes of storage filling up an entire 6′ rack. Especially one as noisy as this is guaranteed to be.

Nooo!!!! Well, actually… Okay. :-) But I want to help set it up! ;-) OpenSolaris 10 without X might be a very sweet prospect for it :-) Don’t need a GUI, just a way to get at that 1.4 terabytes of storage. ;-)

You get a log in by signing up to Blogger for free ;-)

Or you could use the “Other” identity when commenting. That allows you to specify a name of your choice. And if you want, include a webpage (which gets linked to automagically)

These toys we have? :-) Dude, they started out in America ;-) This is Sun Microsystems we’re talking about. We just have the old left overs. ;-) You should be able to find really cheap, much newer gear than the contents of that rack in your area…

Okay… Maybe a bit further south and east… Somewhere like NYC maybe ;-)

But still, a lot cheaper than we can and a lot easier to find. :-) Over here people hold on to their computers until they’re definitely dead. Look at my poor odyssey… More than 8 years of service as a 24/7 server. ;-) And to make matters works, I’m going to see if I can’t revive it this afternoon ;-)

It may be cheaper here, but I have no one to use the expensive computer stuff with. It would be nice to have someone that knew what they were doing live close.

Give it 5 years and your son will be able to keep up with you. 10 years from now and you’ll be wondering how things got away from you so quickly ;-)

The big stuff is fun and easy… Its just damn near impossible to get at a good price over here. That rack is probably the best price I’ve seen in… Forever… for a piece of kit like that. If I could come up with a business case to spend that kind of coin on it, I most definitely would. I get tingles just thinking of all the things I could possibly do with it. :-) Ian has several good ideas. I have several good (imho) ideas. You’ve probably got several good ideas too :-) and I’m pretty sure anyone that sat down and thought about what that kind of storage hardware meant would be drooling just as much as I would be. Not so much over the disc space in that machine as it is when bought, but more a case of the potential given how expandable it is ;-)

The only thing I can see being a pretty annoying issue is backing it up ;-)

Yes, of course I have ideas :) I’m hoping to set up a site to compete with IGN. I think that site is poorly constructed, etc.

But at least then you’d be able to recover from a drive failure without too much effort or struggle. Backing it up would be easier. You’d instantly halve the number of tapes you’d need to 2 and a bit.

Hmmm… I never really got interested in the IGN sites. I use Gamespot, but no where near as much as I used to before ZD/C|Net bought it. My observation has mostly been that most gaming sites cater to the American/Canadian market and pretty much ignore the rest of the world. Its not an intentional thing, its just an assumption made on their part that what works in North America will work everywhere else.

The unfortunate side result is that the only game network I go over regularly is GamePlanet. Not so much their forums, but most definitely their GPStore ;-) Mind you, being an affiliate of them probably gave that away ;-)

Is it just me or are Google’s Captcha’s really long and difficult to read today?
